Measuring System “Incord” – Gyroscope and 2 Pressure Sensors

Technorama 2018

Kinesitherapy equipment is widely used in the process of rehabilitation after injuries, correcting inappropriate posture or suppressing spinal and muscular aches. The main assessor of the rehabilitation process is a physiotherapist; therefore, the progress and outcome are determined by their experience and knowledge. The use of objective criteria that are independent of subjective human opinion, would help both the doctor and the patient to follow the course of rehabilitation, to better understand the requirements of the doctor and to assess the quality of rehabilitation exercises. Our prototype is a systematic solution to objectification of rehabilitation. It uses a therapeutic equipment of closed kinematic chain suspension during active kinesiotherapy. An example of a rehabilitation system is the therapeutic equipment used by Redcord Axis (Redcord AS, Norway), used at the Sport Institute of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. The main goal of the project is a prototype system for objectifying of the process of kinesiotherapy exercises performed using rehabilitation equipment.

Our prototype consists of two parts: information system and equipment. In the information system, the physician can conveniently register the patient for a visit; it shows all comments from previous visits, sensor data and weekly, monthly or annual personal progress / regress. The second part uses accelerometers, gyroscopes, force sensors and visualization software for generated signals. The gyroscope captures the movement of the hip in two planes, and the pressure sensors capture the pressure of the shoulder strap during a certain exercise. Later this data is sent to the information system, which provides clear, objective results. Our prototype was tested and positively evaluated by physiotherapist Vidmantas Zaveckas. The estimated structure of the system should allow it to be universally adapted not only to the Redcord Axis that is used during the project, but also to other systems of this type.
