“HoloApp” – Real-time Visualization of Holograms

Technorama 2018

The protection against counterfeiting of various products, currencies and documents is becoming an increasingly important issue. Due to its dynamic properties, hologramic marks are one of the most popular safeguards. The ever-growing need requires new ways to simplify the process of creating these marks. One of them is to create tools for designing holograms and assessing emerging, user-friendly effects that are difficult to imagine intuitively.

One of them is to create tools for designing holograms and assessing emerging, user-friendly effects that are difficult to imagine intuitively. It covers all the technological stages. The first is to design a mark by turning a graphic image into a hologram (an array of defined periods and orientation points). The second is the visualization of the hologram earlier than its physical realization (production), i.e. the hologram diffraction drawing calculation and imaging in real time, based on the data of the gyroscope integrated in the smart device. The third is the turning of hologram information into data, suitable for a femtosecond laser machine program. These machines realise the image of a projected hologram on the surface of the selected material.

The hologram can be physically realised in several different ways. One of them is through a laser ablation with an interference field. By properly selecting the interference field parameters, holograms, with special dynamic visual effects that occur only under certain lighting and monitoring conditions, can be formed. The hologram diffraction image synthesis application, created by authors of the work, allows you to simulate these effects and check the design of the hologram even before it is made. We compared the images of real holograms that were modelled and experimentally captured by this program, and we were able to find the perfect match between the colours and the effects of light play. The application has been adapted to Android smartphone devices and is available to everyone. You can download it from the Google Play platform.

The interactive user interface is successfully used by the KTU start-up UAB “Holtida” in the design of safety signs. The customers of the company have the opportunity to see the hologram image in the chosen spectral, lighting and monitoring conditions even before it is made, avoiding iterative communication when adjusting the hologram images and the effects visible in it.
