Compression for Scar Treatment

Technorama 2018

As the wound heals, a scar often develops on the place of a damaged tissue. Surgical interventions, corticosteroid injections, etc. can be used to treat them. However, these treatments may have side effects. Therefore, non-invasive methods of scar treatment, such as compression therapy, use of silicone plasters or medicinal plant extracts, are becoming increasingly popular. During compression, the blood flow in the scar tissue, causing hypoxia, is stopped which leads to a decrease of the scar, while silicone softens the scar, protects its tissue from bacteria and reduces pain and itchiness. Medicinal herbal extracts are used for treatment, which contain active antiseptics that stimulate skin healing, antiviral and other additives. They are the essential oils from marigold, red onion, aloe vera, lavender and other plants, containing bioflavonoids, polyphenols and other active substances, which inhibit proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen and essential proteins that stimulate the growth of the scar tissue.

Together with UAB “Ortopedija klinika” and UAB “Plėtra”, a unique complex mean was created for the treatment of the scarring on the limbs, consisting of a spatial structure of a compression knit, containing biocompatible silicone and medicinal plants with a antihypertrophic scar treatment effect. For this purpose a certain fiber composition of a compression knit was selected and the structure of the knitting weave and the spatial form were created, providing effective compression to the patient’s body part that is being treated. A technology for obtaining a composition for silicone with medicinal micro capsules has also been developed.
