4-axis Controller Proxxon MF-70 for Milling Machines

Technorama 2018

In order to automate the passage of the Proxxon MF70 table milling machine while maintaining the ability to work in a manual mode, stepping actuators were mounted on each axle. Also, a control unit with STB4100 controller that is especially for milling, specialized for a Mach3 software, was manufactured. The machines are run by the G code via USB from compatible CAM applications, such as Solidworks, ArtCAM. The project consists of several stages. One of them is to select the right dimensions for the stepper motor mount, to position them correctly so as not to reduce the working space of the milling machine. It is necessary to take into account the design of the milling machine and to process the fasteners so that they do not interfere with manual operation and do not damage the structure. It was also necessary to design and manufacture a holder on the workbench for the 4-axis, and a reinforcement part as well as a mounting ring of the workpiece of the Y axis. This was done using the SolidWorks software. The rear position switches were mounted on each axle to allow the machine to start from its original position. The stepper motors were connected to the specific drivers, and they then are connected to the STB4100 main controller and 12V power supply. The final step – using the flexibility of the software Mach3, the axes were calibrated and the optimal speeds for milling work were set. The usage of upgraded machine with four axles can be very extensive – it can be used while making diligent and small wood works, polystyrene foam works as well as for milling, engraving plastics. The automation of the machines will allow a more precise and professional work, for example, to produce round-shaped rings and cylindrical products in small series with the help of the fourth axle. The device, displayed at the KTU laboratory of the Department of Electronics Engineering, will have its own purpose and will provide the ability to perform milling work in fully automated and semi-automatic modes. The use of motors for machine tools greatly extends their use, since work can be carried out without manual labour, while ensuring greater precision of finished products. Thus, the product can also be of use for students who prepare coursework, semester projects and final bachelor works – the making of necessary parts using this machine expands the possibilities of processing the construction parts. This product also provides access to automated milling technology and its electronic control.
