Project Description:

Navigation system for visually impaired and blind people. Our team worked on how to improve lives of visually impaired and blind people by providing them with a navigation system adapted to their needs. We are utilizing already existing technology – iBeacons in an innovative way to provide the needed information to the visually impaired and blind people. iBeacon is a small electronic device (designed by Apple) transmitting location information to smartphones. The underlying communication technology is Bluetooth Low energy.

iBeacon technology allows mobile applications (running on iOS, Android or Windows Phone operating systems) to perceive the signals from the beacons. The working principle is simple – when a person with mobile phone (and activated Bluetooth) approaches iBeacon, context-relevant notifications appears on the screen (KNOQ application has to be installed). Currently iBeacon technology is used in advertising and marketing. In our case person also receives an audio message via headphones. By linking our project with iBeacons in place, we are offering new possibilities to make the environment user friendly, make lives easier and integrate visually impaired and blind people in society. Project was realized in RTU Design Factory during the Product Design and Development course.
